Greenvale is an idyllic valley town, populated by a number of races. As far as they know, and as far as thier history says, they've lived together like this since time immemorial. But legend says that Greenvale sits in the centre of a huge crater that ended the world. To be sure, you can look about the valley and occasionally find remnants of another civilisation: a moss-covered pillar with strange writing on it here, an oddly shaped trinket there.
But the mountains that line the valley are dangerous and the land that lies beyond is deadly. At least, that's what everyone says. No one has really had any reason to leave the valley in generations. The last group to leave never returned, and they're all surely dead of old age by now, but now, there are signs that things in the valley are not going as they have in the past. There are blighted crops, and strange births. Things are changing, and no one is quite sure what the future will bring.

There is a militia of sorts, It was set up in the far distant past, and though theoretically the militia protects the valley, there's nothing really to protect it from, aside from the rare monster that comes down from the mountains, and the last one was thirty years ago. In fact, most of the millitia's time is spent finding lost livestock and pets, leading parades, and solving petty crime. It's not glamorous.
There is also, of course, a small criminal element, mostly focused on the protection racket, as in, pay us or something unfortunate might happen to your next shipment of carrots.

A little math to think on. Greenvale seems to be a small place, but that doesn't neccesary mean there's not that many people. After the magical colleges of Greenvale managed to save Fallowfield's seedstock, they also improved it a little. This isn't a quick process, so the entire valley isn't being fed from one field, but it does help.
