War never changes, even if we want to believe otherwise. The reality was that we were naive. The reality was that the dragons were arrogant and small-minded. Why we didn't see the possibility before it happened I don't know. It seems so obvious now. Every one of the seven thought they were alone at first, until they ran into another species that wanted what they had. It should have been clear that it was going to happen again.
But even so, we were still caught off-guard. The Dragon Pact demanded that we disarm, completely. We were supposed to be under the protection of the dragons, but when the time came, they were as surprised as we were, and nearly as helpless.
They took everything, our homes, our culture, our lives. We tried to fight back. We even won a few significant victories. In the end though, it just wasn't enough. Now we're here, in these caverns, and they're out there, plundering our world. I wonder sometimes if we ever deserved it in the first place.
